MLB: New York Mets-Press Conference
NEW YORK — New York Mets general manager Billy Eppler has resigned from his position, according to a press release from the team.
“He will be missed,” Mets owners Steven Cohen said. “We accepted Billy’s resignation today as he decided it is in everyone’s best interest to fully hand over the leadership of Baseball Operations to David Stearns. On behalf of the Mets organization, we wish him all the best.”
Eppler also issued a statement.
“I wanted David to have a clean slate and that meant me stepping down. I hope for nothing but the best for the entire Mets organization.”
The move was a surprise, especially because Eppler attended Stearns’ introductory news conference Monday and had seemed safe.
My guess?
Eppler probably realized he’s just a paper pusher with David Sterns in town.
That or he was given an option. Step down or get fired.
Eppler managed to spend more money than any other owner in the history of the sport to win a whopping 75 games. It’s hard to image he ‘stepped down.’
Regardless, the Mets now will now have to replace their GM and manager with Buck Showalter also being relieved. Oh, and also half of their roster.
