TEXAS — Max Scherzer has returned.
The 39-year-old will take the mound in Game 3 of the ALCS against the Astros, marking his first outing in over a month after he strained his teres muscle in his right shoulder.
Scherzer returns with the Rangers who are ahead 2-0 in the series.
“Just trying to get back in the flow of things and just get in my routines, and I get to pitch,” Scherzer said. “You know, thrilled about that. What an opportunity to go out there and get to pitch in the ALCS. This is what you dream of.”
The Rangers initially announced that Scherzer would miss two months due to the injury. He ended up missing under five weeks.
“Given that I was able to get back to actually playing catch within a week of the actual injury, that was a good sign,” Scherzer said. “The longer time you have away from throwing a baseball the longer it takes to ramp back up. I was actually able to get back to a baseball pretty quick.”
Scherzer said that when the injury occurred he put everything he had in getting back healthy by the four-week mark.
“You can never quit in baseball. You can never try to predict baseball,” He said. “You got to out there every single day and do something about it. Fortunately, that’s playing right into my hand.”
It’s amazing how baseball works. After his season was seemingly over, Scherzer now has a chance to put the Rangers in the drivers seat for a World Series appearance.
Scherzer has complied a 3.20 ERA in 45 innings for Rangers this season.
