(Queens, NY) – As the Mets look to rebuild their pitching staff this offseason, the effort won’t be easy.

Beyond rookie of the year candidate Kodai Senga, and veteran Jose Quintana, New York is looking at three blank spots in its starting rotation.

And for the first part of the season, lefty David Peterson won’t be an option. It was not a stellar 2023 for Peterson either way, as he finished the year with a 5.03 ERA.

But he was better after returning from a lengthy demotion to AAA. Now, after undergoing surgery to repair his left hip labrum, Peterson will be out until early May at the earliest.

New president of baseball operations David Stearns announced Peterson’s surgery and expected recovery timeline Wednesday at the GM meetings. And since he also admitted the team is “short on pitching,” Peterson’s absence makes his offseason to-do list that much longer.
