NEW YORK — The Mets are endangered of losing Pete Alonso.

Tim Healey of Newsday reports the Mets and Alonso have not discussed any possible contract extension this offseason.

Alonso isn’t set to reach free agency until 2025, but a long-term contract extension to keep him in New York doesn’t appear to be in the cards right now.

Alonso’s agent Scott Boras made comments last month letting the Mets know that Alonso is ready to discuss a new contract.

“When it comes to the polar bear, we’re not in contract hibernation.”

Speaking at the GM Meetings last month, president of baseball operations David Stearns said an extension with Alonso would eventually be discussed.

“We’re going to have those conversations,” Stearns said. “I’m generally of the mind that I try to keep those conversations out of the public dialogue.”

Added Stearns:

“I’d like to have those conversations behind closed doors. I think they’re most productive that way.”

Alonso was a home-grown prospect for the Mets. He made his major league debut in 2019 and has appeared in 684 games. Since reaching the majors Alonso has hit 192 home runs, more than any player in the sport.
