(New York, NY) – The offseason continues for Major League Baseball, and while the Yankees made a splash earlier by trading for All-Star outfielder Juan Soto, there hasn’t been much since.

And for the Mets across town, things are even quieter. But the rumor mill is churning regardless, and the word is a former Yankee is being pursued by his old club – as well as the Amazins.

Will Sammon of The Athletic reports the Mets and Yankees have reached out to the agents representing Gio Urshela, a third baseman who has played for the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Angels since leaving the Bronx. In 228 plate appearances with the Angles in 2023, the 32-year-old Urshela posted a .299/.329/.374 slash line with 2 HR and 24 RBI. He then injured his pelvis, ending his season.

The Mets may turn out to be the best for Urshela in terms of playing time, as rookie Ronny Mauricio tore up his knee while playing Winter Ball and will likely miss all or most of the upcoming season.

Other options like Brett Baty and Mark Vientos have failed to take the job by the reins, opening up the possibility of a guy like Urshela coming in as a veteran and earning the starting job.
