(East Rutherford, NJ) – The statement from the Giants is terse, and simple:
“The Giants and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale have mutually agreed to part ways.” But the situation behind that reality is quite a bit more complicated, and dramatic.
Throughout this past season, reports emerged from Fox Sports Jay Glazer, in which it was suggested that Martindale might not even last the season as DC. That was rumored to be in connection to friction between Martindale and head coach Brian Daboll.
Then, as it became clear Martindale would not be fired before season’s end, it seemed as though both sides expected the incumbent DC would be back on the sidelines next season.
On Monday, a sudden change erupted, when Martindale reportedly resigned.
And yet, the drama lingered, because Martindale had yet to “officially” resign. He left the team facilities and was spotted flying down to Florida earlier than would be expected, given end-of-season meetings and such. Reports began to emerge suggesting Martindale had cursed out Daboll and stormed off on Monday after linebackers coach Drew Wilkins and defensive assistant Kevin Wilkins were fired – both of them were top Martindale lieutenants.
It’s worth noting that Martindale left Baltimore after somewhat similar clashes with head coach John Harbaugh were reported. The New York Post reports Daboll even attempted to clear the air with members of the defensive staff at points this season, with no direct confrontation resulting. Now, the Giants need a new DC and Martindale can look for a job elsewhere.
