NEW YORK — Yankee Stadium was rocking even before their home opener.
The Yankees expected that the Bronx would rumble for the team’s home opener, but not quite like this.
A 4.8 magnitude earthquake in the tri-state area was felt in The Bronx Friday morning as the Yankees were taking batting practice prior to their game against the Blue Jays.
It occurred at 10:23 a.m. ET, just as second baseman Gleyber Torres was hitting in the batting cage. Torres continued his batting practice round without pause.
Austin Wells was among the players on the field.
“The field was shaking,” Wells said. “Definitely felt it.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that he noticed the shakes, which lasted about 30 seconds.
“I grew up in these things,” said Boone, who was raised in Southern California. “I thought it was the sound system, actually. Then I’m like, ‘No, that wasn’t the sound system.’ I felt that; just vibration under my feet. I’m used to it.”
As for the Blue Jays weren’t on the field yet. The players in the visitors clubhouse didn’t react to the shaking.
The shakes were felt throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and elsewhere. But no major damage or disruptions were reported.
