(East Rutherford, NJ) – The New York Giants are doing a number of things to celebrate the franchise’s upcoming 100th season. Season ticket holders were given a special box and replica Super Bowl rings. Events will be held throughout the coming year. And – perhaps most controversially – special throwback uniforms will be worn at least twice.
Suffice it to say the jerseys have generated a mixed series of reactions. Many of them are negative. It seems Giants rookie WR Malik Nabers is not a big fan. “It’s gonna be hard to swag it out, that’s all I got to say about it,” Nabers said at NFLPA Rookie Premiere while chatting with Sports Illustrated.
The uniforms feature a red-winged helmet, red and blue jersey, tan-brown pants, and striped socks. They’re called “Century Red.” Nabers might need 100 years to figure out how to style and accessorize the kit. A reporter asked how they could look good. “I don’t know. I’ma have to see when I put it on,” Nabers offered.
Giants officials say the jersey is based on what was worn in 1933, the helmet dates back to 1938, and the pants and socks are from 1925. All of the Giants uniforms will have a “100 seasons” patch on the front.
As for Nabers, he’ll hopefully be most focused on playing good football – regardless of the threads he’s wearing. At just 20-years-old, he has inked his rookie contract – a four-year, $29.2 million contract, inclusive of a $18.1 million signing bonus. The gravity of that moment was not lost on Nabers:
“When I put my name on that paper I was kind of shaking a little bit and I got emotional. The job’s not done but another stage in my life was done. For me to make it to this part of my life and my journey, it was a pat on my back in that moment.”
Just don’t ask him to give his honest thoughts on the Giants throwbacks. Or, you could offer him some swag tips ahead of the coming year.
