MLB: Spring Training-New York Mets Workouts
(Queens, NY) – Ever since Mets ace Kodai Senga suffered a shoulder injury during spring training, the question from fans has been routine: when will he come back?
Some fans who have been repeatedly exposed to Mets stars suffering injury have been quick to offer their pessimistic take: he’s not going to pitch this year. So far, after at least two publicly acknowledged “setbacks” Senga has yet to even begin a rehab assignment.
Now, after Senga expressed he feels “regretful” at not being able to help his teammates, we have some potential clarity from reporter Will Sammon.
The Athletic scribe says that Senga may not be able to rejoin the Mets’ rotation until after the All-Star break, which is July 13-16. That would mean Senga missing more than half the season, which is pretty stunning when you consider the team said it first expected him to comeback in mid to late May.
Senga originally suffered a posterior right capsule strain, and then received a cortisone injection late last week. So the word is he’s basically back to square one with his “throwing program.”
On Monday, manager Carlos Mendoza said, “It’s hard to put a timetable here. We got a pretty frustrated player here that he’s not able to contribute to the team.”
But given Senga will need close to six weeks in order to build back up and return to game action, mid-July does seem to make sense.
